Creating Your Beautiful New Smile
If you’re looking for a simple way to improve your smile, a dental crown may be the perfect solution. Beautiful, natural-looking crowns are available from our experienced staff. A crown can serve a variety of needs:
- Strengthen teeth weakened by large fillings, decay or a root canal
- Protect cracked, fractured or worn teeth
- Improve the alignment, shape or colour of a tooth
The crowns created at our practice are individually handcrafted by our experienced local, Australian dental technician to give your smile a natural, healthy look. We are lucky enough to be able to use lab just around the corner from our practice, who are experts in colour matching porcelain to your surrounding teeth.
When a Crown Is Appropriate
There are certain situations in which a dental crown is likely the best way to restore your smile. For example, if a tooth is worn down by decay that is too great to be addressed by a filling, a dental crown may be right for you. It can also rebuild teeth that have been broken down by trauma or an accident.
We also fit a dental crown to a tooth that has been treated with a root canal. A root canal is a procedure that addresses a tooth with an infection. The infected tooth is cleaned out. Afterwards, it isn’t as stable as a normal tooth. Applying a dental crown can give it greater strength so that you never have to worry about having its full function.
The Procedure of Getting a Crown
No matter what your goals are in receiving a crown, the procedure involves two appointments.
Preparation (First appointment)
A local anaesthetic can be given to numb the area. Then, your dentist shapes the tooth’s outer surface to suit the crown. Moulds are taken of teeth with putty placed into trays to understand your bite and to custom-create your crown. You’ll be given a temporary crown to protect tooth structure until you return, usually after 2 weeks.
Fitting (Second appointment)
A local anaesthetic can be given to numb the area. We’ll remove your temporary crown, then fit your new one in. When you’re satisfied with the appearance, we’ll permanently cement it into place, carefully checking your bite for a perfect look and feel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there pain involved in getting a dental crown?
When you receive a dental crown, there is some preparation that your existing tooth will need to undergo before the crown can be placed. At that time, you’ll be given a local anaesthetic so that you feel comfortable.
How do I know if a dental crown is right for me?
A dental crown is good in many situations, such as a broken down tooth. A tooth affected by decay or one that has been broken may also need a dental crown. The only way to know for certain is to have a consultation with our dental team.
Are there alternatives to dental crowns?
Yes, there may be other choices depending on your situation. After your consultation with one of our dentists, they will be able to advise you which option would be best for you. They will explain each option with you in detail and answer any questions you may have so you are fully informed before making your decision.
