Ashburton Periodontal Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease in its later stages, is caused by bacteria that find their way under the gums. The Cambridge Dental team is qualified to assess whether the irritation in your gums is a matter of concern and recommend the necessary treatment to restore your oral health.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
You might experience problems such as:
- Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
- Redness, tenderness or swelling of the gums
- Bad breath
- A pocket forming around the tooth where the gum has pulled away (may contain pus)
What happens if it’s left untreated?
If the bacteria that cause gum disease progress deeper, they can affect the tissue and bone that supports your tooth. Once gums have pulled away from the tooth, it forms a pocket that is the perfect place for bacteria to grow. If left untreated, the bone that anchors teeth into your jaw starts to dissolve, causing loose teeth.
Once the tissue has been destroyed the gum pulls away from the tooth, forming a pocket in which bacteria thrive. If not treated, in time the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw will dissolve, making the teeth loose and causing them to fall out.
What can be done in the long term?
Periodontal disease cannot be reversed once it sets in. You can, however, slow its progression by having regular dental visits and being vigilant about your oral hygiene routines.
